A statement from the PM’s office following a meeting with the security bosses and ambassadors of Turkey and Qatar noted the PM directed the two security heads to make sure the construction work goes on unhindered and that all those involved must be protected.

Noting the road projected will not be deterred by any acts of terror, the PM said Somalia will take full responsibility for the safety of the contractors. The PM’s remarks come amid a sustained offensive by Al-Shabaab which has since carried out two attacks targeting the Turkish workers in less than a month.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the December 28, 2019 truck bombing in Ex-Control area which killed at least four Turkish contractors. On Saturday the militants detonated a bomb targeting Turkish road contractors in Afgooye injuring four. Six Somali security personnel were also injured.

A Turkish military air ambulance airlifted the injured to Turkey this morning.

According to the statement today, the PM called on the contractors to accelerate the construction noting once completed, the road will be vital in facilitating movement, business development and economic growth.

The PM also met Seracettin Aksun, the CEO of the Turkish construction company and pledged his government’s support and security.
